Stop Emotional Eating-Volunteer and Give Back to Your Community

Are your attempts to lose weight sabotaged by emotional eating? Have you considered the relationship between giving back and achieving permanent weight loss? What does volunteering have to do with losing weight and adopting a healthy lifestyle? Lots!

How did you become overweight in the first place? If you have lost weight in the past why have you gained it back? Probably because you have not addressed the reasons for your unhealthy eating habits. Most chronically overweight people experience emotional eating. We reach for comfort foods or unhealthy overeat to cope with combat stress, loneliness, or dispel boredom.

Emotional eaters need to substitute healthier activities. One way to feel better about yourself so you don't turn to food: help others.

Choose YourPassion

Do you mindlessly eat while you watch TV? You can fill that time with worthy pursuits instead. Help out at your neighborhood library, walk dogs at your local humane society, or help a nonprofit with a task that is in your sphere of expertise.

For example, say you are an accountant or bookkeeper. Spend a few hours a month helping to keep its nonprofit financial records. Are you a techie? Offer to set up or maintain the website for a charity you support. You can volunteer from the comfort of your own home theater production.

Don't have kids but enjoy being around them? Most elementary schools have reading programs. Do you prefer hanging out with older kids? Join Junior Achievement or a mentor program at your public high school. You could even refereed little league or youth soccer and get some exercise at the same time. Be a positive role model by shaping the next generation of your employees.

Find a cause that you are passionate about and dive in. Not sure where to start? There are countless web sites that match energetic people with needy charities. Just type in "volunteer" andyour community on any search engine.

Reluctant to go it alone? Ask your friends and colleagues which organizations they are involved in. They will likely have some ideas about how you might be able to help.

Give back. Help others. Volunteer. It's rewarding and you will lose weight, too.
